Area guide

Karen is Nairobi’s classic garden suburb: acre plots, mature trees, good schools and the Ngong Hills on the horizon.

Karen and Hardy form a leafy suburb south-west of Nairobi’s Central Business District. Residents are mainly local families, politicians and expatriates, drawn by a short 30-minute commute to the city on well-tarmacked roads such as Ngong Road, the Southern Bypass and Langata Road. Wilson Airport is 15 minutes away and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport 30.

Top schools are a large draw, and the amenities are many: the Karen Country Club with its celebrated golf course, The Hub Karen, Galleria Mall and the Langata Link Shops, the Karen Blixen Museum, The Giraffe Centre and the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, with Karen Hospital and AAR close by.

“Each of these areas is subtly different — from the colour of the soil to the intensity of the traffic — and I enjoy matching the right space to the right family. Hardy in particular has become a real community for me.”
