Area guide

Lamu town, Shela and Manda island: dhows, coral-stone houses and a UNESCO-listed way of life.

Lamu Island is one of the larger islands of the Lamu archipelago; its best-known towns are Lamu town and Shela. Lamu Old Town dates back over 700 years and is one of the best-preserved Swahili settlements in the world — built from coral stone and mangrove timber, its layout has hardly changed in centuries. Fishing and tourism are the main economic activities.

Manda Island lies directly opposite, reached by boat. It is more modern, with luxury resorts, beautiful villas and acres of land for further development; for shopping, you take a boat across to Lamu. Kiwayu, a smaller island with scenic beaches, is an hour and a half away by boat — a unique destination for the intrepid investor who wants to get away from it all.

“If you’re looking for peace, take a 5am walk along the seafront to watch the fishermen bring in their catch. I’m always on hand to show and share my Lamu.”
