Mombasa Island is one of the oldest, largest and most popular cities in Kenya — still a major trading centre and economic hub, with top-class hospitals, international schools and Moi International Airport. The SGR train from Nairobi opens Mombasa up to the rest of Kenya, and the South Coast is reached by the Likoni ferry, the floating bridge or the Mombasa Southern Bypass.
Diani Beach has been voted one of the top 10 beaches in the world. It is Kenya’s best-known holiday resort town and the top destination for investment along the coast, with bars, restaurants and water sports, one of the best hospitals on the coast and an airport just a 7-minute drive from the beach.
For somewhere quieter there is Tiwi, 17 km north of Diani, with its sandy beach and coral reefs close to the shore; Msambweni and the coast further south; and the Shimba Hills, popular for farms or a quiet place overlooking an elephant sanctuary.
